Description: Vitamin B1 is a water soluble vitamin that is involved in ATP synthesis for energy production. It is also needed for proper function of the heart, gastro-intestinal tract, and for nerve impulse transmission. A deficiency can cause beriberi which affects the cardio-vascular system, digestive system, muscular system, and can cause dementia. Requirements are increased by strenuous exercise, illness, and coffee consumption. No toxic effects were noted from large doses of thiamine.
